vacation

Books read on vacation recently:
Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro
Anna and the French Kiss, by Stephanie Perkins (ARC)
Paranormalcy, by Kiersten White (ARC)
Firelight, by Sophie Jordan (ARC)

The past two weeks have been some of those weeks where I haven’t done a lot of writing but I did do a lot of living. Cleaned out some messy closets, hosted two Fourth of July barbeques, had two sets of family come to stay, went running with my sister, shuttled Boys to swimming lessons, made lots of cookies, read a bunch of great books, wrote a letter to my grandmother, spent summer evenings out in the backyard pushing kids on swings and soaking in summer, went on vacation. It has been lovely.

Usually, it’s a little hard to let go of the routine for me. I’m really disciplined about getting the writing time in every day. I haven’t had more than a couple days off from writing/editing since last year at this time when I took a step back from MATCHED. But this time, it’s felt really good, and it hasn’t been hard to stop writing at all. I think it’s because I needed it so much. Needed a break. To recharge. To get some distance.

It’s a fine balance, isn’t it? Because discipline is what gets the books written, but so is inspiration.

Sounds wonderful. I love July, it’s a great month for family-time.

And I’m SO INSANELY jealous of all of those books. Well, I’ve never heard of the first one, but I’m jealous of all the others! Grr!

When it comes to writing, I find I have plenty of inspiration, but almost no discipline. I think that’s one of the reasons I admire authors so much. It’s SO HARD for me to finish an entire draft (I’ve never done it), so to actually be published… woah.

Also, randomness. I think you might live within the stake boundaries of my cousins. My aunt wasn’t sure…

I think it’s even more important for your writing that you live. I need breaks too.

And those books look great. The only one I’ve read is ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS, and I loved it.

    How did you like Firelight?

I’ve had “Never Let Me Go” on my TBR list for awhile. Last week, I saw the preview for the movie and ran to the library right after 🙂 I’m only half-way through but this book is blowing me away. Usually I jump for books that are more lyrical – this one didn’t hit me quite like that. The characters are sticking with me though; and the way he makes everything around them unravel in such a subtle way. This book has been eerie from the start. It almost feels like horror just without the gore. I already knew enough about the book going in that I didn’t get to experience that “Wah!” moment. But it’s still incredible. I’m glad you had a relaxing vacation!

Awesome book picks. I just finished Paranormalcy & Firelight is very near the top of my pile to read.

Such great book recommendations! It is important to take time off and enjoy our families. It sounds like you’ve been having a great time with yours.

I don’t take breaks off from writing, mainly becaues my procrastination and doing other things really count as me not writing as much, now for the books you’ve read, they sound like an interesting read, I only read one of them though, which is Firelight. Still looking forward to Match now as ever.

Enna Isilee, that is interesting about the aunt (and about everything else too, of course)!

Myrna, I did too! It was refreshing and fun.

Emily, I thought it was great. Fast-paced, creative, different. Loved the desert setting, too.

Natalie, I thought it was amazing as well.

Catie, we have the same book list! 😉

Charlotte, I’m not sure what your reading tastes are. Most of these have some element of the paranormal to them, with the exception of Never Let Me Go, which is dystopian.

Julie, I have been! Thanks! I hope your summer is going great as well.

Gabrielle, thank you! I hope you enjoy it when you get to read it. 🙂
