I have a friend, who, when people ask her what her talents are, says, “I’m a really good reader.”

I love that.

I always pause when that question comes up.  Can I sing?  Nope.  Play the piano?  Not as well as I should, given that I took ten years of lessons. (Cue the unfortunate incident in my church congregation in London where the music leader asked if I would fill in for the usual pianist, and I ended up just playing the top hand for all the songs.) I’m not a great chef; I don’t keep an immaculate house; my garden is a little bit sad, my craft abilities are nonexistent.  I don’t take great pictures; can’t sew or quilt; can’t draw or paint.

But my friend made me think.  We’re all good at things.  We all have talents.  Sometimes they’re just not obvious ones.

I’m also a good reader, like she is.  While I’m not the world’s best writer, I do work hard at it, and I think that’s a talent. I can write a very good lesson plan (I remembered this as I worked on some for a class to keep my teaching license current).  I am really good at reading blogs but not so great at commenting.  Okay, maybe now I’m stretching.

What are some unconventional/hidden talents you have?  Don’t be shy.

I can hold my sugar. Some might not see this as a talent but that’s because they’re blindsided by the menial effects to eating a lot of sugar…namely weight gain.

I am one who can eat candy breakfast, lunch and dinner, and as snacks in between, and NEVER feel sick. How freaking awesome is that?

Erin that is truly astounding. A talent for the ages. 😉

Ally you are much more than just a good reader (although I would like it if you commented on my blog more, that’s true). You are a VERY talented writer, and that is a talent SOOO many people wish they had. It doesn’t matter how hard you work at it, we can’t all be naturally gifted to eat inordinate amounts of sugar without a thought. 😉 I think one of your talents is to brighten any room you are in. And you are one of the best moms I’ve ever seen, you are so sweet and patient with your boys, and that is a talent too. Oh wait, am I supposed to be listing my own talents? uh… I’m a really fast typer. And I think I’m really good as a “make over” buddy – I’m very good at helping other people find clothes that make them look H-O-T and doing their make up and hair. Is that a talent?

I’m really good at being bossy and opinionated. Some people might not consider that a talent, but there are people in the world who can’t form their own opinion or tell people what to do and how to do it, which is a sad thing in my opinion. See? My opinion. It’s a ruling force in my world. I’m also really good at staying awake no matter how tired I am. My flight from the Philippines lasted 31 hours and I was awake through the whole thing, then got six hours of sleep and got out of bed at 8 a.m. because my dad told me it was the best way to beat jet lag. Ally, you are talented at talking in a low, sultry voice that reminds me of Grace Kelly. You should have been an old-time movie star.

I can take a power nap like nobody’s business. Give me 15 minutes of absolute down time and within 5 I’m asleep and 10 later I can wake up completely refreshed and good for another six hours.

Though I’ve yet to find a practical application for it I’m really great at procrastinating.
