summer plans and possession

My kids are out of school, the weather here is finally warm, and the garden (such as it is) is planted. Summertime. I love it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this blog and what it is, and what it isn’t. Lately it’s been a bit of a travelogue about things I’ve done. I still have two events coming up this month and a few more scattered throughout the summer, so the travelogue won’t completely end anytime soon. But I think I’m going to attempt to have the blog this summer be about this quote of Stephen King’s that we all adore:

“If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”

So, on Tuesdays this summer, I’ll try to post about writing, and on Thursdays, I’ll try to post about reading. It won’t be anything super cerebral. Just some writing ideas and thoughts and questions and then some books I’ve been reading, etc.

Starting next week. (Does it bode well for this experiment that I’m already making exceptions?) But. Anyway. This week, I’m going to be giving away two books. On Thursday, I’ll give away the ARC of CROSSED. And today, I’m giving away a signed hardcover copy of POSSESSION by Elana Johnson.

Here’s the summary:

Vi knows the Rule: Girls don’t walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.

But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them….starting by brainwashed Zenn. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous: everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn.

This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.

Awesome, right? I am SO excited about this book. I read the first couple of chapters a few months ago and ADORED them and then had to write my own book instead. That stinks! I can’t wait to finish reading POSSESSION. Elana is a fantastic author and person, beloved by the online world and the “real” world too. Huge congrats to her on the publication of her book!

So here are the rules:

1. Comment here to enter. To enter, you must leave your e-mail address, only comment once, and also tell me a rule that you can’t help but break (in the spirit of Elana’s book).

2. Contest is open internationally.

3. Contest closes at midnight MST Wednesday, June 8th. (Yes, this is a very short contest!)

That’s it! Good luck! And come back on Thursday to find out the winner and to enter to win an ARC of CROSSED. 🙂

The rule I always break is don’t talk in class. In result of that I break the other rule about paying attention to the teacher. I’ve also broken the rule about squirting hand sanitizer on the wall, but that’s a whole other story. 🙂

Yay! I am so excited for Elana and POSSESSION.

One rule I can’t help but to break is the speed limit. I miss the days when our interstate limit in Montana was “reasonable and prudent”.

A rule i can’t help break: I also don’t really break rules. But one I’ve made for myself that I can’t help break has to do with not being able to stop eating too many sweets!

Thanks for making this international. Dying to read this book. And CROSSED!

I don’t know if its a “rule” or not, but my kiddos are constantly reminding me that if I don’t have anything nice to say I shouldn’t say anything at all…

I can’t help it that there are ALWAYS bad drivers on the road or that things don’t ALWAYS go my way! Can I? If so, someone teach me!

I’m not much of a rule breaker anymore. I’m supposedly an adult now and all that. The rule that I have the most trouble with is speed limits, lol. I’m always at least 5 over.

Thanks for this awesome chance! a rule I can’t help break? Well just about anything! but I really (always) break my mom’s rule of 2 hour reading. I know! It’s unfair right? So when the 2 hrs ends, I hide in the bathroom and keep on reading. I just pretend I’m taking a long bath, wash my hair and she dosen’t notices! you can’t really blame me though! Books r what keeps me sane from all the things tht’s hppening 2 me ryt now. w/out it, you’ll probably see me in treatment. Email: kimson_dino@yahoo.com

I can’t help but ditch Spanish class. It’s awfully boring, and I took Spanish last year anyways. I just say that I’m absent for a basketball game, since I’m on the team, and teachers usually know that I’m gone a lot for sports anyways, so I usually get away with it 😛

Congrats to Elana – It was fun to see her face and book on TKE’s email this a.m.

Rules I love to break: I like to read the last page of a book. It makes the crazies settle when I am so involved in a book I can’t put it down.

I must sneak caffinated beveraged onto BYU campus when I attend events there. I can live without the soda, but I feel like such a rebel when I drink it at the game. 😉

Fantastic giveaways! I’ll be back on Thursday.

Rules I can’t help but break? Well, I’m in work right now, and we’re not really supposed to be reading blogs – but I do work in the Young Adult section of a bookshop, so it’s research!

See you Thursday, and thanks for your genuorousity! (Shame we don’t sell dictionaries up here…)

I can’t help but speed almost constantly when I’m driving, but that’s a kind of boring rule… um…

I’m trying to think of something better, but I’m at a loss. Guess I’m just not much of a rule-breaker. I’d love to see what rules Violet breaks, though…

I can’t wait to read this book. It sounds awesome. The rule I would break is not being able to see the one I loved. When I was dating my husband we had sort of a Romeo-Juliet relationship. Neither of our parents wanted us together, so we frequently found ways to find each other, (mostly when I got off work, he would come sneak over and my boss, our friend, would do my closeup list so we could spend more time together). It was dangerous and so exciting. Thank goodness all worked out for the best! =)

Ok, I finally thought of a rule that I break often, that I don’t think will somehow come back to bite me in the butt.

The rule I ALWAYS break is being home by midnight on a saturday!

There’s a reason too!! on Saturdays a really cute guy works at the youth center disco evening, I just want to sit there and stare at him alllllllll evening. I end up staying longer so I can shyly say hi to him every so often! (It’s a shame he has a girlfriend!)

  • Rhiannon Ryder
    June 7, 2011

Oh boy, the rule I ALWAYS have to break? There are so many, how to choose?

Um no snacks so close to supper is a huge one (especially since I’m cooking and I snack throughout the whole prep!), and staying up late on a worknight is another big one because I’m always too sucked into whatever I’m reading to put it down!

My number one rule to break though is no more cats. I broke it at 1 cat, 2 cats, and 3 cats, now we have 4 cats and I can’t wait to break it again.

Rule I always break… I hate taking the effort to separate my clothes, so I tend to throw all of the colors in to the same load. I have yet to turn my whites pink. Until I do, I will probably continue to break the rule.

I also put plastic in the microwave. Wear black with brown. And never floss.

I am a real rule breaker — a causeless rebel.

The book sounds great and I am absolutely thrilled to hear you will be giving away a Crossed ARC I cannot wait to read that!!!!
A rule I cant help but break would have to be not staying up too late. I have to get up early with the kiddies so I always tell myself to go to bed at decent time but it is so hard and absolutely impossible when I have found a good book to read… I guess either of these giveaways would help me keep up my rule breaking 🙂

I think the rule I break, that I really shouldn’t, is the staying up past midnight. It’s not my fault that books are so good that they make me want to stay up to finish them! But I enjoy every minute of my rule breaking. 😀

The rule I tend to break is:

We are only supposed to have 20 books out from the library (as staff we get 20, customers only get 10) but I very often take more out. I currently have 22 books on my card, I also have 5 books on my mum’s card and 3 on my brothers. I can’t help it. I’m a bookaholic. 😛

    School Uniform
Ugh I really despise school uniform but because I am a good student I wear my school uniform. Until last week. well because I don’t want to make this into a story….I’ll make it short. I had a crush on this guy for like forever and just last week I found him staring at me. And of course I took this opportunity and started to wear the cutest shirts in my closest. Long story short…. I snagged him before any other girl could. Not that I’m saying get out of dress code but this is a rule I couldn’t help but to break it. ; )

    June 7, 2011

Awesome giveaway, I sooo want to read this. Thanks so much for the chance to win. Now, a rule that I always break??? Jeesh, there are so many LOL I’ll have to go with speeding. I tend to have a lead foot and I’m surprised I have yet to get pulled over in my tiny town, but my kids are late to school everyday and It’s difficult to light a fire under their butt’s in the morning. I have my daughter who refuses to wake up and actually get out of bed, my middle son who is up at the crack of dawn but easily distracted and ends up playing or worrying about a missing toy than getting ready and my oldest who just likes to argue and fight with the other two and groan about having nothing to wear. By the time I’ve dragged everyone out of the house, it’s necessary to speed to school 🙂

  • JazmynRodgers
    June 7, 2011

I’m a huge rule breaker! I have some major issues with feeling controlled and because of that I hate following orders. The rules I break most often are the stupid ones. For example: “All students who drive to school are required to purchase a parking permit”, “No open toed shoes” (right, because my toes might get chopped off by an untamed pencil), “No outside containers” and the king of all dumb rules: “No reading in class”

  • dashofnutmeg
    June 7, 2011

As far as rule breaking, I admit to checking my phone a few times during class, which is strictly prohibited. But in all fairness, it was only to see what my favorite authors are tweeting about or when I’m supposed to be somewhere or something. Yup, much more important than trigonometry…right?
I don’t break all that many rules, though. When I was younger I did more “bad” stuff. Like during nap time, I would get up and play with toys. It’s fair enough to say that the preschool teachers didn’t like me very much.

I rule that I just cant help but break is the rule of opression(mostly applies at home :P). I would never be able to live freely if my right to choice was taken away. I have the right to choose whom to love, what to dream, and what to hope for in the future. No one can ever choose that for me. No one, I mean no one, has the power or right to take that away from me. If they dare, they better be prepared for a good struggle, because I won’t ever give in.

I can’t not talk. I went to a camp over the summer and several of the games included a no talking rule. It was impossible! I don’t believe I’m a chatter box but it’s challenging to not talk around so many new people!

Book sounds really cool, can’t wait to read it!

Thanks for the contest! There are probably lots of ‘rules’ I can’t help break, the one I’m willing to admit to is snacking on all things chocolate and sugar after dinner, late at night, after the kids are all tucked up in bed.

I also have to say that I am looking forward to Crossed, I also have a few friends who are also looking forward to it’s release after lending them Matched (and also probably cursing me, because they have to wait til November – but I couldn’t contain my love for it!)

Hmm… a rule that I can’t help but break…. it would definately be the fact that when I’m supposed to be doing homework, I am probably surfing the internet (like now) or more often, I am reading a book. I’m not saying the homwork doesn’t get done. I just have to break another rule for that to happen: don’t do homework in class.

I can’t help but break the rule “No pets in bed” as a kid. Our huge german shepard (Mojo) just looked so uncomfortable laying next to my bed. No way was I comfortable (twin bed + german shepard + nine-year-old = someone gets crammed up against the wall)… but he was worth it. =P

One rule I can’t help but break… I’m not much of a rebel, but when I was in middle school and my parents told me to go to bed, I would turn the light out and read under the covers. I know, didn’t everyone do that? But that concept was new to me. Anyway, awesome contest 🙂

I had made up a rule a while back of no eating past 8:00 p.m., especially when I am pregnant since it gives me heartburn. And yet every night, you can find me sitting in bed, watching a movie with a bowl of ice cream 🙂

The rule that I perpetually break is falling in love (with people I shouldn’t fall in love with). What’s more is that I can’t help it even when I’m conscious of the fact that falling in love can be dangerous and potentially ridiculous. It creates a vulnerability that under normal circumstances would drive me crazy! Sometimes I don’t even care that I fall into an unrequited love. I’ll just keep on loving anyway. It steals away my self-control and desire for autonomy. Not that I seem to mind. Half the time I enjoy every moment of it anyway. That is, until I fall out of love and realize my utter foolishness. . .

    June 7, 2011

I just finished my freshman year of college and during the year I still managed to find time to read for pleasure. As an English major (which I’m sure you know), you get your fair share of reading anyway, but it’s for pleasure that always helps me wind down after a hard day of classes and homework (I love books, I won’t deny it). So, during Finals week, I told myself I would NOT read for pleasure as that would take from time I should be spending studying. It works for the first day or two then I break down and tell myself I’ll read for only a half-hour, claiming it’s a “study break.” I feel like it’s an okay rule to break!

Hmm…there’s a lot of rules I break, well according to my mom at least, but the rule would have to be to never, ever log mom out on Facebook. She goes insane when I use her computer and log her out.
I hope I win, and good luck everyone else.

I agree with you – If you don’t have time to read you don’t have time to write. One rule I always break is saying I’ll start my diet on Monday. Monday always comes, but so does the starbucks and the carbs…….

  • Susan
    June 7, 2011

Ohhh, that’s easy. For as long as I can remember, I’ve made a “rule” for myself at night that, right before going to bed (usually around midnight), I will read “just one chapter” of a book I want to start and then go to sleep.
I have broken it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Every time, without fail, I end up reading until 3:00 or 4:00 AM until I finish the book in one sitting. School night, summer night, it doesn’t matter. I’m hopeless.
I guess that at least means the books I’m reading are pretty darn good! It also means I read a book a day or every other day depending on the week, for the most part. 😛

Thank you for the giveaway, Ally! You’re the best!

    Can’t wait for Crossed <3

This is a really great question. What rule do I often break? That I’m willing to admit to? LOL Well since we are on the topic of books… telling myself that I will not buy anymore books til I have read the ones sitting in my *to be read pile* which I believe is greater than 30. I can’t help myself. If I don’t win this book, I will be going to the store to buy it 😀

One rule I made awhile ago is that I won’t start a series that isn’t finished; I have to wait until all the books come out to start. That’s a rule I break every single time. It happened with Fallen, The Mortal Instruments, Shiver, Hush, Hush, etc. I can’t help it! They’re too good to wait!

I try not to make rules since I am most likely to break them anyway but I remember the one rule that I broke that has changed my life in a positive way… go to school. Ha! Now, I’m not a drop out or anything, actually just finished with college. Out of all my memories thought, the one thing I remember from when I was young was not going to school and being ‘the good girl’ but the experiances I had when I broke the rules. Boy, did I have a blast! Hiking, traveling, adventures, boys! Unless the rules are about life and death, I think most are made to be broken. 🙂

I made the rule that I’m going to write a little every night before I go to bed so I can get a novel completed…and unfortunately I keep breaking the rule. But when I come home at 2am exhausted and in desperate need of a shower, I always convince myself that I’ll just write more tomorrow. Alas.

    My rule breaking habit:
I always say i’ll study at least 3 hours every night, but then i get on the computer and promise myself ‘i’ll do it tomorrow’ but then i do it again and again…
    It’s a wonder i still manage to get A’s in exams :s

A rule I can’t help but break is the rule I made that I will go to bed at 11:00 every night, but after getting caught up on the internet, I look at the clock and somehow it’s 3 in the morning. O.o I really do need more sleep.

Mmmm. I’m not a big dangerous rule breaker, but I do break my own rules. I tell myself when I’m going to go to sleep every night so I can actually get enough sleep, but I always manage to stay up an hour or two later, reading most of the time, but sometimes just watching old episodes of The Office. 🙂 My mom has also made a rule for the summer for my brother and me, so we don’t sleep all day, that we have to be up by 9 a.m. and I haven’t managed to keep that but once.

I hear thudding steps behind me as I run away from my past. The wind is whipping through my hair. I think I’ve lost him. I stop and take a deep, calming breath, leaning my head back towards the awakening sun. Finally, silence. I’m never going back.

A rule of mine that I break pretty often is don’t go into a book store until I finish my list of books I already want to read(28 books). I made this rule because I will go to a book store and for some reason my list will just magically grow by at least 10 more books… and I still fail to follow this rule :/

Only one rule that I break? Oh, there’s so many to choose from. I consistently break many that have already been listed . . . budget on book spending, time spent reading, etc. Another that I break is not taking books to the pool – or into the bathtub. I refuse to let my kids read near water, but I don’t go to the pool or in the tub without a book.

One rule my mother has for me is that during the school week i can’t stay up late reading. Of course being the good child I never stay up reading past two A.M.on a school night. I figure that 2:01 is late but anytime before that is not late at all. Of course some people disagree with me but i say that two is not as late as three or four. I just can’t help it when the book is soooooo goood.

that I would always break. . . . . . probably my curfew or lights out when I was younger. Once my dad had turned the lights off in my room I would wait a few minutes, reach under my bed to pull out a hidden book, and use a flashlight to sneak a few chapters in before midnight. Not really horrible but when you are 7 it feels pretty cool.

I loved your book! Thanks for the give away! And i will definitely read Possession.

    June 8, 2011

I found out about this book yesterday or the day before and was so excited about it! And then my excitement was dampened when I found out that my local library doesn’t have it, as it rarely has new books. And then I saw this post and saw that I wasn’t too late, and I got excited again. I just love book contests. xD
I generally follow rules, but the one rule I can’t help but break over and over again is: ‘Reading waits til after homework is done.’ I just can’t help it. The book world has pulled me in and will never let me go, and homework is so much less interesting. lolz. I AM trying to be better though, since I’m going to college next year… 😛

In the spirit of thrilling endings ( I just finished Matched not ten minutes ago) here is my own rule I just have to break sometimes.

I love surprises and I hate when they are ruined, by this law I would never dream of skipping to the end of a book, a chapter or so much as a page to see what happens. But, occasionally, a book will grab me and pull me into the suspense of their dreamland situations and it’s hard to resist. It seems to happen as a chapter draws to an end. The action is rising, and so is my blood pressure. In a moment I will know what the next cliffhanger will be, but a moment is too long. The only way to keep my eyes from scanning just a few lines down and experiencing the sweet treat of knowing, is my hand as it slides to cover the words. But sometimes… I. just. can’t. help. myself. My hand is still. And I break this rule of no peeking and bask in the shock of a thrilling new twist in this other world that seems so real that I’m not so sure it isn’t me who is living it..

I find it very difficult to drive the speed limit on major roads and highways. Speed limit sign says 55, I see and do 65 or 70. I feel like it’s almost impossible for me to drive that slow.

In neighborhoods or densely populated, I will do the speed limit, though. It’s just something about being on a highway that makes me want to drive fast!

On of my favorite places is in my past, (25 years ago) when I was in an art class with your mom. I remember drawing a sketch of my hand holding my children’s hands and thinking how your mom would understand the importance of the piece because of how she always talked about her Ally. After teaching for 25 years and teaching my students the love of reading’ I discover that you are the Ally I heard so much about at the beginning of this wonderful journey. Thank you and you mom for being such a big part of it.
