links and playlist!

Some very cool articles have popped up online in the last few days. There is this one from the LA Times and this one from Publishers Weekly. I am tremendously grateful to the reporters and reviewers for giving time and attention to MATCHED.

And speaking of the book…here is the playlist! Because it was taking me wayyy too long to make it fancy (I am incredibly bad at all things computery), it’s just a list. And you will notice that I have a tendency to really like folk music, or music that tells stories. Most of these songs I discovered partway through the writing of MATCHED and they reminded me of the story in some way.

The playlist is in chronological order. By this, I mean that the songs at the beginning of the playlist make me think of things that happen/feelings that are felt at the beginning of the book, the ones in the middle make me think of events/emotions in the middle, etc.

I hope you enjoy! And if you like any of the songs, PLEASE purchase them. We want the musicians to be compensated for their artistry!

1. Only The Young by Brandon Flowers
Love the line “Only the young can break away.”

2. The Story by Brandi Carlisle
This has been played a lot in various forms, but it’s such a great song and it’s perfect for Cassia, Ky, Xander…and Grandfather.

3. Extreme Ways by Moby
I always picture Cassia striding through the streets of the Society with this playing in the background.

4. Be Still My Heart by The Postal Service
A lovely upbeat song about that first flush of love.

5. This Love (Will Be Your Downfall) by Ellie Goulding
My cousin Lizzie is the one who helps me find a lot of my music, and she discovered this one. I prefer the non-live version.

6. Grapevine Fires by Death Cab for Cutie
A beautiful song about love and the end of the world.

7. Silver Lining by Rilo Kiley
Love the beat, the clock ticking, and the finding of a silver lining.

8. Kingdom Come by Coldplay
I can picture Ky singing this.

9. The Hill by Marketa Irglova
A gorgeous song…and it resonates on a lot of levels with the story.

10. Thick as Thieves by Dashboard Confessional
Or, as my husband refers to it, The Prisoner’s Dilemma Song.

11. Run by Collective Soul
An old favorite that I played a lot when I was stuck.

12. Till The Sun Turns Black by Ray LaMontagne
Does anyone have a more heartbreaking, beautiful voice than Ray La Montagne?

13. Someday You Will Be Loved by Death Cab for Cutie
I think of Xander when I listen to this song.

14. Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy
Bittersweet and beautiful!

15. Further On (Up the Road) by Bruce Springsteen
Perfect for the ending of MATCHED…a journey song. Big thanks to my dad for introducing me to Springsteen when I was four.

16. How Far We’ve Come by Matchbox Twenty
And we have to end with something apocalyptic but spunky.

I hope you enjoy! Let me know what you think! And thank you very much for all the comments and congratulations. I appreciate them very much!

I just finished MATCHED on Friday, and I really enjoyed it. Your writing style is so beautiful. I love that you posted your playlist!
I’m working on a novel right now and I wrote down all the songs that inspired me, imagining someday that someone might care to know. Who knows, right? Anyway, I’m really looking forward to the next book!

I do playlists for my writing too. In fact Thick as Thieves is on one. I love Dashboard Confessional.

I finally put 2 and 2 together with your name and realized that I’ve read some of your earlier works, Yearbook, etc. and loved them. Now I’m heading off to get Matched. Yeah. I’m real quick on the uptake. I think we have some bloggy friends in common. I’m looking forward to getting to know you.

Matched was brilliant as is your taste in music! I came across this song a few days ago and I kept thinking about it as I finished the book. If the book were to be made into a film, this is the song I imagine playing in the trailer. Just thought I would share my thoughts! Thanks so much for writing!

  • Larissa
    December 27, 2010

Wow I completely agree with Allory…that song it is perfect! I think especially for Cassia and her developing thought about the world she lives in. I got MATCHED for Christmas and I didn’t put it down once I started reading, it’s awesome and I am going to try to patiently await the release of CROSSED πŸ™‚ I also love many of these songs in the playlist and I find myself drawing parallels to MATCHED and the relationships between Cassia, Xander, and Ky in other songs, I love when I can feel like I’m part of the story after I’ve read a book. πŸ™‚ I’ll also have to look into some of the other series/books you have written!! Thank You!

This is a great song list! I listened to every one!!

There’s a song that seems to define the feel of the very end of the book, It’s “Waiting for the End” by Lincoln Park (I know, I usually do not like them, but this song has the same “feel” as the songs listed about)

Here are some of the lyrics:

“I know what it takes to move on
I know how it feels to lie
All I wanna do is trade this life for something new
Holding on to what I haven’t got”

“Waiting for the end to come
Wishing I had strenght to stand
This is not what I had planned
    It’s out of my control

Flying at the speed of light
Thoughts were spinning in my head
So many things were left unsaid
It’s hard to let you go”

    Sitting in an empty room
    Trying to forget the past
This was never meant to last
    I wish it wasn’t so

All I wanna do is trade this life for something new
Holding on to what I haven’t got

πŸ™‚ <3 Marked!!! I do so hope it turns into a movie!!!

    For ‘Til Kngdom Come
I think it would be epic to have Ky sing the first part ’til it comes to “in your tears and in your blood” then Cassia would sing. Then when the “’til kingdom come” part comes they would sing a duet. It would be AH-MAZING!

It’s sooo weird, because I just got Ellie Goulding’s record “Lights” on iTunes this afternoon, and listened to it when I was outside walking before. So I had all her songs in my mind and so I kind of expected them to be on this playlist as well. And there she was! Haha, so weird.
But it is a really good list, I like many of the bands here.

    Dear Ally Condie,
I’m a young 13 year old writer. writing is the thing i love the absolute most. except for the fact that i’ve been having very strange writer blocks and forgetting what i want to write about. I have the worst problem ever and it is very annoying: I can come up with endings but begining stump me HARD! Some of the endings I can come up with could be passionate like: as they stood in the raining fire with nothing but eachother to they kissed a passionate kiss and held a passionate love. You see I was sort of hoping that you could e-mail me some answers to my problem. If you could I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you soooooo much.
    Your #1 fan,

Whenever I’m having trouble thinking of something for a story, like a beginning, I think about the characters I’ll put in the story/book and what they’re about, like if it’s a romance I’ll try to make the beginning involve something girly like, the main girl is painting her toenails a bright pink while she’s on the phone with her best friend talking about her crush. You know? I also will have a cup of tea, I don’t know why, but it calms me down and helps me think more easily. (Chamomile is the best (:) I hope this helped.

Hey, I just finished reading Matched and i LOVED it!!! When I read the part where she was talking to her official about how Ky and Cassia’s love was set up and Cassia said That the kiss is still ours. Omg!!!! I am a HUGE fan and I LOVE Crossed and Matched!!!!! I got Matched for Christmas and was done it by the end of Boxing Day and so then the next day I went out and bought Crossed and then I finished that the same day I bought it. I’ve read them both a TON of times. I am a writter and I love how real you make the characters seem. I wish my characters seem as real as yours. According to my BFFs Taylor and Sarah who are the only people who I have ever let read my books my characters are but I think they are just being nice. Matched and Crossed both always remind me of so many Taylor Swift songs. Each time I read them they remind me of different ones. Mostly Love Story, Story of Us, Forever and Always, and Ours though. You are my idol Ally!!!!

Cruising around walmart with my friend we happened to cross the book section. We looked a few of the books there since I was looking for another series to read. The hunger games was right next to cross and the cover illustration really pulled me in for the buy! I took it home and started reading and the rest is history! No not really :p

I didn’t put the book down once, not even for work. I hid the book under my cash register to read it when I had no one coming through. I absolutely ADORE this trilogy because it’s so different from anything else I’ve read! My personal favorite is how you’ve tied today’s generation into the series. Brilliant. I bought the second one as fast as possible, but now, just like all your readers I have to suffer to wait for the third one T.T I CAN’T WAIT :DDDDD
I even got several of my friends, guys and girls a like. to open up and read it. It always leaves you wanting more or wondering what is written on the next page :3

Thank you for this wonderful land you’ve created, it is absolutely marvelous. and I ADORE the playlist you made.

    Dear Mrs. Condie,
I hope you read this. It would mean a lot to me. I read. I am a reader and it is what I do. Every once in a while I come upon the just perfect book. So perfect that I .. I feel weird. Your story is AMAZING. I don’t see how anyone could come up with something better. I found myself falling in love with Ky, feeling sorry for Xander, and sadness when Vick died. You are an amazing writer, and I would love to write, too. This, I can not wait for the third book. If I know me, I will go around for weeks after I finish it sulking. Agh why do you have to have such an amazing story!?!?!? ( I am 14 by the way)

Can I just start off by saying, WOW. These books…I just…I really have no words to desribe what I feel. I don’t know how many times I have read the books, I can’t count that high πŸ™‚ Matched, Crossed, Reached. My goodness. You don’t know what kind of look I had on my face when I saw that Reached was coming out. I literally screamed at the top of my lungs. I love the effect on the covers: the red, blue, and green for the tablets; Cassia slowly breaking out of the crystal ball in each book; the symbols in the second letter of each title. Overall, I won’t ever be able to say in my lifetime that I have (or will) ever read a better book series than this. I idolize you. I think that you have an ability to write in such a way that it makes you realize that this is what true writing should be like. It makes you want to open up and just embrace every moment in the books. I feel like I am right beside Cassia, Ky, and Xander when I read. Every single time, I know that in every corner of the book, there will be something waiting for me that will make me wonder. The first time I read the books, I read both in 3 days. I have told all of my friends (in detail) about how amazing these pieces of writing are. I am so ecstatic that Reached is coming out in November, and if I can wait that long, I will be the first one at Barnes and Nobles to buy the book. I am absolutely stunned by your ability to capture every moment that the characters have. You put every detail needed, every word and sentence, just makes you want to put yourself into the book, and live it out for yourself. I am so happy that you made this past year one that I can enjoy by reading the books over and over again. I am hoping you write more and I wish the best of luck to you. -Danielle

Hey! I was just listening to a song recently, and i thought that it suited Matched really extremely well. It is called “You Are Goodbye”- Holly Conlan. I feel like this really represents Cassia Reyes. And some of the poems mentioned in the book. I hope you consider this!

I love making my own playlist for the books I absolutely love and while looking for songs for my Matched Playlist I came across Secrets by OneRepublic which I think almost perfectly describes Ky! I especially love the line “Got no reason, got no shame. Got no family I can blame. Just don’t let me disappear, I’mma tell you everything.” and “til’ all my sleeves are stained red, from all the truth that I’ve said.” I hope you get the time to read this and listen to the song if you haven’t already heard it…

    Dear Ally Condie,
May I just say how much I LOVE your stories! I am a young 12 year old writer myself. I am having trouble getting to the point in some of my stories. I have really great characters and plot lines but it takes me, like, three pages just to describe one person. I try to take out some of the details but then the story kind of sounds incomplete. If you have any advice fro me I would greatly appreciate it! πŸ™‚
Thank you from your #1 fan,

I love that you have playlists for your books! As a YA Librarian, I’m always looking for new ways to engage young readers. Your playlists allows us to not only read and discuss your books, but opens a whole new area of discussion – that of music and how your song selection relates to what we read. I’ve “borrowed” this device for other books we read, asking the kids to come up with their own playlists! Thank you so much!

Whenever I hear the song Major Minus by Coldplay, I think of this series.
I really love these books, and this playlist for them. Science fiction has always interested me and when I found Matched, your writing was so mesmerizing! I can’t stop thinking about Matched.

But I have one song that I can’t get out of my mind and I promise you, it fits so good to Matched, Susanne SundfΓΈr – White foxes.
